What is a pterygium? The conjunctiva normally has clear and distinct boundaries from the adjacent cornea. There is therefore a chronic degenerative disease of the conjunctiva, which is characterized by the development of a fibrovascular membrane from the nasal side of the conjunctiva towards the cornea. This membrane constitutes the pterygium.
