Astigmatism is a refractive error in which both distant and nearby objects appear cloudy and distorted.
This happens when the cornea is not completely spherical but has different curvatures so that the light rays focus not on one point of the retina but on two different ones.
In this case the image of an object is distorted (eg a point looks like a cross or a ball like a rugby ball). Astigmatism usually occurs in combination with myopia and hyperopia.
