If today's upward trend continues, by 2050 half of the world's population, almost 5 billion people, will need glasses for distance, predicts an international study of ophthalmologists.

Myopia is caused by the axial length of the eyeball, which causes the image to focus in front of the retina instead of just above it. As a result, the patient does not see clearly in distance.
